An installation of 99 loading bays has been completed by Stertil Dock Products to support a revolutionary new DHL distribution hub at Manchester Airport City.

DHL has begun operations within the Manchester Airport City Global Logistics site which was a £15m project completed in 2015. Situated close to junction 6 of the M56 Motorway, the location of the DHL distribution hub is ideal to meet growing demand for parcels traffic between Manchester Airport and the North West. The company’s new 37,308 sq ft facility incorporates a mix of conventional loading bays and specially shaped bays to accommodate Mercedes Sprinter vans. In fact, the new site replicates a similar installation at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

Prior to securing the contract, Stertil Dock Products constructed a prototype installation within its premises in Northampton. Extensive trials of the prototype proved the performance, effectiveness and reliability of its design.

The DHL distribution hub receives around-the-clock deliveries by a wide range of road transport including vans, trucks, container lorries and double deck trailers. The ‘goods in’ area of the hub features an installation of six loading bays most of which comprise WE 574 collapsible frame dock shelters, XF 3020 dock levellers, Thermadoor sectional insulated doors and wheel guides plus LED dock and traffic lights. However, two of the loading bays, which are designated to accommodate double deck vehicles, incorporate extra height WIS dock shelters featuring revolutionary head curtains.

Upon arrival, these vehicles, which carry palletised consignments and roll cages containing boxed goods, are unloaded and individual items are placed onto conveyers that transport the boxes into the heart of the distribution hub for sorting and processing. This operation involves the breaking down of delivered loads into individual customer consignments.

Once assembled, the consignments are then transported on conveyers to specified loading bays within the hub’s pick up and delivery (PUD) section. These bespoke PUD bays, which are serviced by a fleet of Mercedes Sprinter vans, incorporate an external tapered dock seal that matches the shape of the vans. This minimises heat loss from the building during loading and unloading operations whilst also protecting personnel against adverse weather conditions.

“We are delighted to have been commissioned to supply all the loading bay equipment for this prestigious new distribution hub within Manchester Airport City,” says Andy Georgiou, Stertil Dock Products’ General Manager. “Our research and development engineers worked closely with DHL to design our bespoke solution and testing of the prototype system at our works in Northampton proved its effectiveness beyond doubt. The DHL hub maintains a relentless 24/7 operation and the Stertil docks and doors help ensure that the site runs as efficiently and smoothly as possible.”

LED Eco Lights has released a dramatic and informative CGI video to highlight the performance, versatility and energy-saving benefits of its revolutionary Goodlight G5 LED batten luminaire. Designed and developed as the 21st Century LED replacement for inefficient and energy-hungry fluorescent tubes, the Goodlight G5 is heralded as combining the looks for retail with the performance for industry.

The two minute video reveals the stark disadvantages of outdated fluorescent fittings that are not only extremely energy intensive but also totally reliant on old lighting technology. This includes control gear that requires additional maintenance and has a relatively short lifespan. Performance is also often poor and accompanied by various operational problems such as flickering, buzzing and blackened tubes.

By contrast, the Goodlight G5 batten LED luminaire provides ‘instant on’ illumination, super brightness of 110Lm per Watt and a 50,000 hours lifespan. Launched as the 5th Goodlight LED Hero Product, this new model also offers energy savings of up to 65% to achieve potential payback within four months and is covered by a comprehensive five year guarantee.

The new video graphically illustrates the ease and speed of installation which, when upgrading an existing fluorescent tube batten to the Goodlight G5 LED, can be completed in less than ten minutes. This simple installation process is assured by a choice of recessed and surface mountings plus suspended fixings, all within the physical space of the original fluorescent fitting. Also, this flexibility means that the new Goodlight G5 LED batten luminaire is ideal for general and task lighting applications in retail stores, classrooms, car parks, warehouses, offices, hospitals and numerous other locations. Importantly, because there is no glass component within the product, the Goodlight G5 is also perfect for use in all kinds of food and drink production areas.

Available in two, four and five foot lengths, the Goodlight G5 LED batten luminaire has been conceived to offer a sleek appearance matched to rugged performance. The new IP65-rated G5 LED batten luminaire also incorporates ‘Five Way’ protection against rain, dust, ice, heat and corrosion. Furthermore, the model may be specified complete with an integral battery back-up to ensure suitability for use in emergency lighting systems.

“If anyone’s looking for a dramatic, hard hitting and concise explanation of how our new Goodlight G5 LED batten luminaire is the perfect replacement for outdated fluorescent tubes, I urge them to take a look at our new video,” says Saima Shafi, LED Eco Lights’ Marketing Director. “The video pulls no punches in exposing the shortcomings of energy-hungry fluorescents and clearly highlights the benefits and advantages of our new Goodlight G5 LED batten luminaire. LED Eco Lights is kick-starting April with a mix of new product launches, charity sponsorships, promotional giveaways and birthday celebrations to mark the company’s 10 Year Anniversary.

The company was established in 2006, when LED was a new lighting buzzword, and success arrived early when it was named as LED Lighting Partner to the British Gas ‘Green Streets’ initiative. This ground-breaking project invested £2 million into helping Britain become greener. In the same year, the Co-Operative Food Group launched its comprehensive stores ‘energy refit’ programme, selecting the company’s Goodlight LED Tubes into all cold-store and refrigeration areas nationally.

Other high profile customers included Thames Barrier, WH Smith, Pets Corner, ESPO, London Fire Brigade and Trade Team Distribution. This success was followed in 2011 by the largest LED project of its time when 1,400 Goodlight LED High Bays were installed at the British Airways World Cargo Centre at Heathrow.

During 2013, LED Eco Lights launched its unique 3-in-1 functional Goodlight 2D LED Lamp which won ‘Most Innovative Lighting Product’. The company also opened an office in the Middle East to meet huge demand for the Goodlight brand. This was followed by the completion of its 4,000th LED installation and the introduction of two

industrial products - the GX1 LED High Bay and the G360 LED SON Replacement - which were mentioned as ‘Top Lighting Innovations of 2015’ by Lux magazine.

In 2015, the company launched its Bright Goods LED filament lamp range to the delight of interior and lighting designers. The wide selection of popular shapes including globes, pears, squirrel cages, candles, long tubes and traditional GLS bulbs, invoke nuances of Victorian nostalgia whilst offering 21st Century energy-saving benefits.

LED Eco Lights gained ISO 9001:2008 quality accreditation in August 2015 and launched its G5 Linear LED Luminaire as the modern solution to replace outdated fluorescent fixtures.

Another proud moment arrived in 2015 when the company was chosen as the only lighting supplier by producers of DIY SOS: The Big Build, Veterans Special which highlighted the renovation of dilapidated properties to create much needed homes for war veterans and their families.

Stertil Koni, the UK’s leading commercial vehicle lift specialist, has supplied a leading DAF dealership with a set of wireless mobile column lifts to speed up PDI inspections at the company’s Leicester depot.

As one of the largest DAF trucks dealership groups in the UK, the company operates 10 dealerships strategically located across the East Midlands and East Anglia. The group supplies new and used DAF trucks and provides comprehensive repair and maintenance. Each dealership holds an extensive stock of DAF and TRP truck and trailer parts supported by emergency overnight availability. Over 150 factory trained technicians are employed by the group and many workshops are open 24/7 to enable maintenance work to be performed during off-peak hours. At the company’s Leicester depot, a set of Stertil Koni ST1085FWA wireless mobile column lifts is used to increase productivity within the PDI centre.

The ST1085FWA lift is rated at 8,500kg which means that each set of four columns offers a total lifting capacity of 34,000kg to ensure the safe handling of all types of truck and trailer. Also, if an increased lifting capacity is required, this can be achieved simply by adding extra columns. The lifts’ microprocessor controlled lifting system, combined with Stertil Koni’s unique hydraulic synchronisation system, ensures extremely smooth lifting and lowering. Operating speeds are also impressive with the lifts reaching the full height of 1850mm in just 94 seconds.

Providing maximum access to the underside of raised vehicles, the Stertil Koni ST1085FWA vehicle lift uniquely incorporates a wireless control system. Each of the mobile columns is equipped with two long-life deep cycle batteries which, when fully charged, will power the fully-laden column for more than 30 lifting cycles - easily a full week’s use. Battery life is prolonged due to the fact that, unlike a screw-lift, power is only used to raise the vehicle therefore less time is spent recharging the lift which is carried out via a 230v single phase supply.

Positioning of the wireless columns is flexible: they can be used in any configuration around a vehicle. Also, with no power or communication cables to connect, set-up time is drastically reduced thereby making the system fully operational much more quickly. Each column incorporates its own eBright full-colour, touch-screen control panel which allows simple synchronised operation from any column.

The columns incorporate Stertil’s maintenance-free, synthetic runner wheel system, which is self-lubricating, and the system is covered by a lifetime guarantee. Importantly, with no cables on the workshop floor, the risk of tripping is removed thereby providing valuable health and safety benefits.

In a typical day, the DAF dealership at Leicester handles all kinds of vehicles ranging from 7.5 tonne rigid trucks up to two or three axle tractor units and the Stertil Koni lifts save a lot of time. The company’s engineers are very happy with these new additions to the workshop and the fact that the lifts are mobile is a great advantage. Accessibility underneath raised vehicles has been vastly improved and engineers are now able to set the lifts to the height that best suits their needs.

Widely acclaimed for its extensive range of commercial vehicle lifts, Stertil Koni is also seeing increased interest in its specialist 4-post wheel alignment lifts.

The four tonne capacity Stertil Koni ST 4040WA lift has been designed to simplify the checking and adjustment of wheel alignment or tracking on cars and vans. Each lift features slip plates and turntables integrated within the two load bearing platforms. The combination of these devices ensures controlled movement of vehicles’ wheels to allow precise measurement and adjustment.

Available in four variants, the Stertil Koni ST 4040WA wheel alignment lift offers a choice of platform lengths and widths to suit the broadest range of cars and vans with wheelbases from 1800mm to 4500mm. The lift provides a low drive-on height of 190mm and long drive-on ramps that ensure a safe drive-on angle of just 7°.

The ST 4040WA lift is electro-hydraulically powered and operated by a simple push button control panel conveniently mounted on one of the lift’s posts. Providing fast and smooth movement, the 4-post lift offers a maximum raised height of 2000mm to ensure comfortable working and unobstructed accessibility beneath raised vehicles. The lift remains perfectly horizontal in every locked position and the absence of protruding edges on the platforms contributes to workshop safety.

“As a company, we have earned an enviable reputation over many years for our extensive range of heavy duty commercial vehicle lifts,” says Tony Edge, general manager of Stertil Koni. “However, this success has tended to overshadow our experience and technical expertise in providing lifting solutions to workshops specialising in lighter vehicles such as cars and vans. Our ST 4040WA wheel alignment lift is a typical example so we’re all delighted that it’s becoming increasing popular with new and existing customers throughout the UK.”
